What Is An Electrostatic Air Filter?
Air Commander electrostatic air filters clean the air by using static electricity – a safe, naturally occurring phenomenon. An electrostatic charge is generated by air flowing through a maze of static prone fibers. Airborne particles are attracted and held by the static charge until released by washing.

Removes Tiny Microns
The air you breathe contains many irritants such as pollen, dust, bacteria, mold spores, pet dander and smoke. Most of these particles are smaller than ten microns. Your Air-Care filter is an effective and efficient way to reduce the number of these particles in your air. two columns with image & video
Filter Re-Sizing Service
Do you already own one of our electrostatic air filters and are moving to a new house or building? We can resize your filter so it fits the new system. Simply send us $15 for the resizing fee + $9.97 for shipping and we’ll resize your filter to fit your new system. Ask your dealer about this new service.
Note: We can only reduce the length and width of the filter – we can not increase the size of either the width or the length.
What is Air Filter Arrestance?
Arrestance is just a fancy word for filtering capacity. All Air Commander filters come in one of two types of arrestance – either 94% or 88%. The 94% arrestance filter provides higher filtering capacity by trapping up to 94% of particles in the air. We also offer filters with an 88% arrestance. This provides slightly less filtering capacity, but is less restrictive, allowing greater airflow through the filter. An 88% arrestance filter would be appropriate using the following formula. If the filter square footage is less than the tonnage of the unit, we recommend an 88% arrestance filter.
How To Determine If You Need an 88% or 94% Arrestance Filter
Here’s an example: If you have a 16×25 filter and a 2.5-ton unit, the square footage of the filter is 2.8 SQ feet (16 x 25 / 144 = 2.8). Since 2.8 is greater than 2.5, you are fine with using a 94% arrestance filter in this system. If the filter size is 12×18, the square footage of this filter is 1.5 (12 x 18 / 144 = 1.5). Since 1.5 is less than 2.5, we would recommend an 88% arrestance filter in this case. All 94% filters and the flexible frame 88% filters contain an EPA registered anti-microbial material to inhibit the mold and bacteria growth on the filter surface.

How to Clean Electrostatic Air Filters
Cleaning is quick & easy When cleaned as directed, your electrostatic air filter will give you many years of trouble-free use. Failure to properly clean the filter may lessen filter effectiveness, and as with any air filter, it is possible for an excessive dirt buildup to cause air flow resistance sufficient to damage other ventilation components. Depending on your specific situation the filter should be cleaned every 4-6 weeks. Cleaning Instructions
- Simply remove the air filter.
- Flush with water in opposite direction of air flow arrows then rinse other side.
- Spray with ZAP! CLEANER to remove stubborn stains.
- Rinse thoroughly to remove remaining dirt. 5. Drain excess water, let air dry, and reinstall.
Different Types of Air Filters
Air Commander manufactures electrostatic air filters with 3 different frame types: Gold, Silver or Flexible.
Permanent Gold Frame Air Filters
Our Gold Frame filters are made with a premium quality extruded aluminum, gold anodized frame with a durable and attractive finish. The frame is 4 separate pieces with a single screw fastening each corner together. The frame is strong and sturdy. Gold Frame filters come only in the standard 1″ depth.
Gold Frame 94% Arrestance
Reusable Silver Frame Air Filters
Our Silver Frame filters are made from a single piece of roll-formed galvanized steel fastened together at one corner with a single rivet. This frame type is more cost-effective than the gold frame but is not quite as strong and sturdy. Silver Frame filters are available in either 1/2″, 1″ or 2″ depths. The 1/2″ (7/16″ Actual) silver rigid framed filters have 2 layers of polypropylene between 2 layers of expanded steel for improved air flow and rigidity. Our 2″ rigid framed filters are configured with the same construction as the 1″ Electra silver, but with a 1.5″ white polyester ultra high loft impingement filtering center layer.
This filter has the same ratings as its one-inch counterpart. We also have 1″ & 2″ filter frames and disposable pads that consist of a roll formed a metal frame with one layer of expanded metal support secured to one side. The filter material is tucked into the frame and is held by the fibers catching on the expanded metal support and the air flow. When soiled, it is easily removed for disposal and replaced with a clean piece of filter material pad. Many commercial air systems use banks of 20 or 40+ 2″ thick pleated filters. Our high arrestance, low resistance permanent filters, however, will give your commercial accounts an economic alternative to the disposable filter.

Washable Flexible Frame Air Filters
Our Flexible Frame filters are made from sewing flexible polypropylene webbing around the edge of the filter so the frame is actually a flexible fabric rather than metal. Flexible framed electrostatic air filters conform to the same specifications as the rigid metal framed filters. The 88% Flexible Frame filters are about 3/8″ depth. The 94% Flexible Frame filters are about 5/8″ depth. The 94% flexible framed filters have a 1/2″ polyester layer sandwiched between 2 layers of polypropylene with a polypropylene webbing frame sewn around the edge and fit most 1″ applications.

We Carry 41 Standard Air Filter Sizes
Every filter we manufacture is either a standard size or a custom size. The length and width of a standard size air filter are undercut by 3/8″ to accommodate standard size openings. This is consistent with other filter manufacturers. For example, if you are replacing a 25″ x 25″ disposable filter, then you need a standard size 25″ x 25″ electrostatic air filter. The actual size of this filter is actually 24 5/8″ x 24 5/8″.
A custom size filter, however, is cut to the exact sizes you specify. So a custom size 25″ x 25″ filter will be exactly 25″ x 25″ – there is no undercut. The difference is very important – so if you have questions, please contact us.
Things You Need to Know
- Standard Size Filters will follow industry standard and be 3/8″ undercut, i.e. a 12 x 20 will measure 11 5/8″ x 19 5/8″. The width of the frames are 7/16″, 7/8″, and 1 ¾” for ½”, 1″, and 2″ filters, respectively. Flexible frames are approximately 3/8″ thick at the edges and 5/8″‘ thick at the center. Note: 1/2″ frame filters are only available in 88% arrestance.
- Custom sizes are also available, please specify the EXACT dimension that you want the FILTER FRAME to ACTUALLY measure. Custom Size filters are NOT undercut.
- All electrostatic air filters have an 1/8″ overall tolerance. This means the thickness of the frame could vary by as much as 1/8″.
